What is an "unconference?"

Here is a video of an Ed Camp in Philadephia,. It gives you a good idea of what to expect:
(oops! Apparently not everything at an edcamp is sharable!)

An unconference is a participant-driven meeting. The term "unconference" has been applied, or self-applied, to a wide range of gatherings that try to avoid one or more aspects of a conventional conference, such as high fees, sponsored presentations, and top-down organization. There have been a number of unconferences to date in education, the most notable being the various "Edublogger Cons" held at ISTE and TCEA. We have also added GT training as part of the session, so now EPISD teachers can get their 6 hours GT update training!

Why an iPad Camp in El Paso?

There have also been a number of Ed Camps held around the United States, including Philadelphia, Boston and New York City among others. As far as we can tell, there has not been one in the Southwest United States. This will be the first for El Paso and all of west Texas, Southern New Mexico, and Souther Arizona.

How is an iPad Camp Organized?

Unlike traditional conferences, Ed Camp is only organized around a simple theme: Tech Transforms Education. That is it. There are no keynote speakers, there are no fees, there are no hassles. YOU make the conference because YOU set the schedule at the conference. You decide what is presented, you decide everything except the location!

An unconference emphasizes the attendees, not the presenters. Networking, socializing, sharing and collaboration are all part of the conference. Participants can be presenters, presenters can be participants, workshops can be presents in rooms, or informally in hallways or outside!

An unconference can be conducted using a number of different facilitation styles. From Wikipedia, some of these are:

Some FAQ's

Q. How is this organized?
A: During the first hour , the attendees will decide what sessions will be held. You "vote with your feet" and go to the four sessions that sound interesting to you held throughout the day. Lunch is on your own. We will go a FULL DAY, so expect to be there until at least 4:30. This isn't a day for babies. Everyone is a professional, and everyone is expected to take the day seriously, while at the same time having fun! There will be an evening social for everyone at a local eatery for everyone that makes it through the day! TBD.

Q. Do I have to Present?
A. No. But it would be great if you were READY to present with something. The best part of Ed Camp is that the audience is the presenters. Everyone has something to share, even if you don't think you can.

Q. What should I bring?
A. Bring your laptop or iPad or someway of getting online. You also should bring lunch money because lunch is on your own.

Q. What is the cost?
A. Ed Camp El Paso is free of charge. You will have to buy your own lunch.

Q. How do I register?
A. Registration is first-come-first-serve. We will be limited by the size of the venue, so check the registration page and sign up. We will cut off registrations when we reach a full house.
